Working on Stuff

Today I am working to finish up a site called. Backlot. It is a video sharing site for Edwards Digital Media.
The exciting or at least challenging things that I have to work on today is learning how to get a thumbnail from an uploaded video. I would prefer to do it automatically so I don’t have to provide a seconday upload for the customer. This will keep the upload process fast and simple, just upload the video and i will take care of the rest.
After I figure out the thumbnail issue then all that is left is displaying those thumbs on a page with a gridview that has pageination and is sortable via a dropdown list at the top of the page of the categories.
Oh and of course they have to be able to link from that page to the video to actually be able to watch it sense that is the whole idea behind this site.

Apple CEO takes leave of absence

So what does it say about a company when the CEO takes a leave of absence and all the news and blog sites freak out and the stock tanks.
To me this means this company does not have any longevity. That once this CEO steps down it will only be a matter of time before the company crumbles. A CEO should be able to be replaced and the company still function. It shouldn’t cause a giant uproar among the community.
This situation scares me to some extent. Just like any other position in a company in order to keep the business flowing and working as usual you should have a well trained and qualified back up. This is simply to keep the company running in case of emergency.
Most companies won’t let their top management ride in the same plane together. The reason for this is so that if the plane crashes the head is not cut off the organization. So with this in mind all business leaders should take this approach to ensure continuity.
Next step after ensuring your company won’t collapse just because a leader is no longer with you is to have a plan of action when that leader leaves. The person taking over that position should be able to step right in an set everyones minds at ease. At this point Steve Jobs is taking a leave, stock tumbling, temp CEO is stepping into the role and nothing has been said publicly to calm the nerves of investors. This speech or news release should have been done immediately once the news about the leave of absence was found out or released. This could have ensured minimal disruption to business.
I don’t work to ensure today is successful I work to ensure everyday from here to the end of the end is successful. Why put your company at risk just because something unforseen happens.
