Software Languages

7/29/2011 7:56:49 AM

Do we not have enough languages out there? I was a classic asp developer before .NET came out and hit the scene. All the code for Classic ASP was VB based. So why has everyone made the jump to C#?

Well I am good at asking questions but not necessarily good at answering them, especially these questions.

I have decided to make the jump to C# on my next project. It is time to get more skilled in that language. I believe my lack of skills in that language is starting to hold me back.

You can accomplish the same things in both languages. So I at this point do not understand or see if there is a benefit to moving. But no matter what I am making the move. The move should not be too challenging because first the concepts of what I want to do are the same no matter what language I am typing in. When building an application the fundamentals are the same. Data in, crunch data, data out.

The language itself is very similar to javascript. That should give me a leg up as I have been developing with javascript for over 10 years.

So we will see how this journey goes and I am certain I will blog about it. I will be making posts of what I find are different better or worse when making this transition.

Windows 7

7/1/2011 12:30:23 PM

I can not believe that I have actually seen something this week about whether or not someone should upgrade from Windows Vista to 7. Really? Upgrade already.

I know it sucks to be constantly upgrading your stuff. It seems like we are always in a situation where we have to upgrade something. But you have to realize that there are typically benefits to staying up to date with everything. Software development companies do not spend a ton of time working on previous version. They only work on bug fixes and security issues. But if you want to get the latest and greatest stuff you have to be on the most recent version. Now don’t get me wrong. I am in no way proposing upgrading as soon as something comes out. I do not understand the people that wait in line at the stores to get the first version of anything. It is smarter to wait at least until the first service pack is released before jumping on board any of this stuff. Trust me your life will be much easier.

As for the fools that line up for the first version of stuff, well you can have that life I don’t want it. The first version is never the best version so just be patient, wait, and not only will you get a more tried and true version it will usually be cheaper.
